It strikes me that many of you who are not natives of Las Vegas, Nevada, or those that may just drop by for weekend visits may be unaware of our local celebrities. We have quite the star power in this town. I know, I know, you're thinking, Barry Manilow, Wayne Newton, Sheldon Adelson. Wrong. No, the people I'm thinking of make up a local pantheon of mental illness. A retarded Justice League if you will. In my wildest dreams, they team up and pitch in to clean up this one horse town.

Glen Lerner--Da Heavy Hittah. He's a personal injury attorney who runs ubiquitous radio and TV spots here. He speaks with an accent that I think is supposed to be Brooklyn except I've been to Brooklyn and they don't talk like that. His commercials are about how large he is (and I think you know what I'm talking about), the lessons he's learned from playing football (actually, he only says "ball" as in, "back when I played ball, I learned to never stop until the game is over.", which leads me to believe he actually played a less manly sport like baseball or tennis), and the amount of fraud he'll personally commit on your behalf should you make the decision to retain him.

Mr. Happiness--Mr Happiness hangs out on the corner of Ft. Apache and Sahara and screams at traffic. Most of my female friends do not care for him as he has the habit and humping the air whenever he sees an attractive girl/woman/pet/car. Most of the time he's conservatively dressed: green blazer, top hat, sun glasses and pants almost 50% of the time. He has some kind of old Fender knock off that I don't think I've ever seen him actually play. He also varies his outfit to stay topical. During March Madness, he'll wear a basketball on his head as just one example.

The Chopper and John Dunbar--I actually don't know much about the Chopper. For a long time I didn't get local TV, I only got California stations on my satellite. This would occasionally confuse me as I used to think I lived in an exciting place where there'd be police chases every day. Alas, that's LA. Anyway, I guess the Chopper is this sinister looking bald guy who had his own A&E Reality series called "King of Cars". I never caught it. I do know he was charged with assault after getting into a scuffle off his lot. John Dunbar is just your average wacky commercial making car salesman. He'll have other local celebrities who have nothing better to do like Randel Cunningham appear in commercials with him, they are usually either period pieces or short costume sketches and inevitably show him getting some kind of injury in his quest to sell you a Toyota.

So, that's them. I don't remember these celebrities from my days growing up in Grand Junction although we did spawn weatherman and local public radio figure Nathan Tannenbaum who followed in my footsteps before I did and became an Vegas icon (just not as flashy as the 4 above)...

Glen Lerner is actually from Boston... I worked for him in Las Vegas.  It's a Boston accent, although he went to law school in New Orleans... another place known for its weird accent that some people say sounds like a Brooklyn accent.
